Willie Hubbard was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison Monday for throwing a punch that led to 48-year-old Edward James Scott being impaled on a metal fence.

Hubbard, 35, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in March following a bench trial before Judge Matthew Coghlan, according to court records.

Authorities said Hubbard punched Scott in the face because Scott had been harassing guests at a party in the 9100 block of South Greenwood Avenue about 8 p.m. June 16, 2013.

The blow caused Scott to lose his balance and and fall on a wrought iron fence, which impaled him near the eye, police said.

Scott later died at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and the Cook County medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide.

Hubbard, of the 1000 block of East 111th Street, turned himself in to police, authorities said.

On Monday, Coghlan sentenced Hubbard to 4 1/2 years in prison, according to court records. He was given credit for 72 days spent in jail, and will be required to serve one year of mandatory supervised release after his sentence is complete.

Andrew L. Jones was sentenced to three years in prison Monday for an alcohol-involved crash that killed his girlfriend on the West Side in 2013.

Jones, 35, pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated DUI and one count of reckless homicide at a hearing before Judge William Hooks, who handed down the sentence, according to court records.

Authorities said Jones was driving a 1998 Saturn south on Western Avenue when he lost control and hit a viaduct near 16th Street about 2:15 a.m. Feb. 23, 2013.

The force of the crash split the car in half, leaving the passenger’s side completely exposed, police said.

Jones' girlfriend, 26-year-old Cicero resident Chantelle Jones, was a passenger in the vehicle and died three hours later, authorities said.

Authorities said alcohol was a factor in the wreck. Police noted that Andrew Jones was also driving with a suspended license and without insurance.

Andrew Jones, of the 700 block of West 17th Street, will receive credit for more than two years spent in jail since his arrest.

A 21-year-old South Side man was ordered held without bond Wednesday for allegedly shooting and killing two men who had fought with his father last summer.

Thomas Bishop Jr.’s father got into a “verbal and physical” altercation with Corey Hudson, Robert Cotten and others in the parking lot of a West Englewood strip mall because he felt he was being “disrespected,” authorities said.

During the Fourth of July fight, Bishop left the strip mall at 63rd Street and Seeley Avenue and returned in a car with a loaded rifle, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Przekota said.

By that time, the fight had ended and Bishop’s father had driven off with two others.

But Bishop still got out of the car, took out the weapon and opened fire, Przekota said.

Hudson, 34, suffered 10 gunshot wounds to his body and two graze wounds, Przekota said. Cotten, 35, was shot four times.

A witness identified Bishop as the shooter and surveillance footage from a nearby business shows him leaving the area and then returning before the shots rang out, Przekota said.

Assistant Public Defender Margaret Domin said Bishop lived with his girlfriend in the 8200 block of South Wolcott Avenue. The police report lists Bishop’s address in the 6200 block of South Claremont Avenue.

Bishop has twin boys and a daughter and had been working as a mover and at a temp agency, Domin said.

Just before the shooting, Schiquille Salter had helped his grandmother get bags out of her car and made a pizza to share with friends, said his aunt, Rev. Franshonn Salter. About 10 minutes later, gunfire erupted and Schiquille Salter was struck.

Jonathan Garcia was killed, and another man was wounded, when gunfire erupted outside a Logan Square grocery Wednesday night.

Authorities said Garcia and a 33-year-old man got into a fight with two men outside the FoodSmart Urban Market at 2901 W. Armitage Ave. about 11:10 p.m.

During the fight, one of the men pulled out a gun and shot Garcia and the 33-year-old, authorities said.

Garcia, 19, of the 3300 block of West Palmer Street, was shot in the chest and died at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center less than 30 minutes later, authorities said.

The 33-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and neck, police said. He was also taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment.

Ald. Joe Moreno (1st) posted a statement about the shooting on his Facebook page:

This was a gang-related shooting. A Latin Lover was shot and killed, and another gang member has been wounded.

There is video footage and the police are investigating. They recovered a gun but the person that shot the victim got away.

I will be working with the 14th District Police Department to organize a community meeting on the two recent shootings in our area in an attempt to improve our safety efforts.

By Thursday afternoon, the crime scene tape had been removed and customers entered the store near the spot where police found Garcia's body the previous night.

Jeannette Hamman, who has been a teacher in the neighborhood for 15 years, did not know a man was shot to death outside the store Wednesday night.

"Logan Square is somewhat of a changing neighborhood ... there is still a certain element you watch out for, but overall it has great neighbors and a strong community."

Another customer, who asked to be identified only as Alex, said he works nearby and heard about the killing Thursday morning.

"I feel like its an everyday thing," he said. "It's the whole city, mostly on the South Side, but here a little bit too."

Garcia's death is the sixth slaying so far this year in the Logan Square community. Most recently, 24-year-old Mikal Johnsona onetime star athlete at Rolling Meadows High School who later studied music at Columbia College Chicago— was gunned down in the 2700 block of West Bloomingdale Avenue on April 8.

Investigators recovered a .38-caliber revolver at the scene, police said.

A man inside the store during the shooting said he heard four shots. He did not want to be identified.

Every August, Jerren Jackson hosted a barbecue in Washington Park for her friends and family.

The gathering usually attracted more than 50 people, including her four children and several of their friends that she took in when they were troubled teenagers with no place else to go, friends said.

Jackson, 53, will not be grilling ribs this summer after she was stabbed and beaten to death May 5 at her West Ridge home.

Prosecutors claim Jackson's son, 24-year-old Jerome Jackson, slit her throat because he thought she was stealing money from him. He was charged with first-degree murder and is being held on $1.5 million bond.

Myeko Ohana, 37, said she was friends with Jerren Jackson's daughter and lived with the Jackson family as a teenager. She said Jerren Jackson always treated her like a biological child.

"She loved everybody the same," Ohana said. "If you needed a place to stay, and you were friends with her children, you could stay."

Tiffany Stallworth, 36, said she also stayed with the Jackson family when she was in high school. Stallworth said she considers Jarren Jackson her adopted mother, and is proud her funeral services will be standing room only.

"She was was warm, kind, funny and everybody loved her," Stallworth said. "One thing that stood out about Jerren is that she was family oriented. She loved and had a gratifying relationship of all of her children, biological and otherwise."

Prosecutors said it was one of Jackson's biological children who killed her.Jerren Jackson / Submitted photo

The day Jerren Jackson was killed, neighbors saw a woman run from the home and called 911. When police found her body in her apartment in the 6200 block of North Bell Avenue, she had been stabbed multiple times and had a piece of a dinner plate embedded in her cheek. She had a "severe slice wound from ear to ear on her throat," multiple cuts on her head and face, a stab wound to the chest and defensive wounds on her hands, prosecutors said.

Responding officers saw Jerome Jackson exit the apartment building wearing nothing but boxer shorts and socks, prosecutors said. Jerome Jackson, who was covered in blood, walked to a nearby convenience store and took a beer without paying, Abraham said.

The officers stopped Jerome Jackson, who had two cuts on his hands, and he told officers he got the cuts when he stabbed his mother, prosecutors said.

While in custody, Jerome Jackson gave a recorded statement admitting to beating and stabbing his mother because he thought she was stealing his money.

A public defender said Jerome Jackson has “severe mental health issues.” He will be back in court on May 26.

Chicago Sun-Times

An alleged gang member has been charged with murder after prosecutors said him and a friend fatally shot a 68-year-old man during a 2013 robbery in the Logan Square neighborhood.

Joshua Johnson, 23, was nabbed at the Rolling Meadows courthouse on Friday when he appeared for an unrelated case.

He now also faces first-degree murder charges for the Dec. 12, 2013, shooting death of Cayetano Sandoval in the 1900 block of North Spaulding Avenue.

Prosecutors said Sandoval had just returned home from his job at a bakery when Johnson and another man approached him after he parked his van about 2 a.m.

Johnson demanded Sandoval give them money and began hitting him. Johnson held Sandoval down and the other man took out a gun and opened fire, prosecutors said.

Sandoval was shot five times and died at the scene, authorities said.

Prosecutors said the robbers, both Latin Kings gang members, fled after the shooting.

Surveillance cameras captured the murder, and several witnesses also saw the shooting, prosecutors said.

The robbers fled to a friend's home, and that friend gave police a statement about the murder, prosecutors said.Cayetano Sandoval

Cayetano Sandoval

Johnson himself admitted he hit Sandoval as they tried to rob him and also held him down as the other man shot him, prosecutors said.

Despite not pulling the trigger, Johnson was charged with murder and attempted armed robbery. The other man has not yet been charged.

Johnson, whose home address is listed as the 8500 block of South Avalon Avenue and the 1900 block of Oakton Street in Elk Grove Village, has previously been convicted of felony residential burglary and felony burglary.

On Saturday, Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered Johnson held without bond. He will be back in court Monday.
