Antonio Hobson lived to have fun, and there was never a dull moment when he was around, a friend said.

“He always knew the right thing to say to get everyone laughing,” said friend Triondus Suggs. “He was all about having fun, and if you weren’t willing to have fun with him he'd go off and have fun by himself.”

Hobson, 34, was killed in a drive-by shooting in the in the 1800 block of South Fairfield Avenue in the North Lawndale neighborhood Aug. 27, authorities said.

Police said he was sitting in a garage when a car drove past and somebody inside opened fire about 9:45 p.m. that night. Hobson, of the 1600 block of South Komensky Avenue, was struck multiple times and died at Mount Sinai Hospital about two hours later, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Hobson had two young daughters and always put his family and friends first, Suggs said.

“The saddest thing to me is that about a month ago he told me he worries about me out here on the West Side because of all the shootings and killings going on,” Suggs said. “That shows just how caring he was.”

When he wasn't spending time with friends and family, Hobson enjoyed listening to music -- especially enjoyed Bob Marley, Suggs said. He also enjoyed playing basketball.

“He loved to play basketball, but more than that he loved to watch Chicago sports," Suggs said. "The Bulls and Bears were his number one teams. He’s probably looking down from heaven cheering on the Chicago Sky right now.”

Police said Hobson was a documented gang member, but Suggs described Hobson as a family man.

“I saw an article that made sure to mention he was a documented gang member, but that’s not who he was,” Suggs said. “We all make mistakes and some of us run with the wrong crowd, but he was more than that. He was someone’s son, a father, a grandson and an extremely loyal friend who would do anything for anyone.”

Nobody has been charged for the murder. Area Central detectives are investigating.
