Denzel Lewis was ordered held without bond Friday after prosecutors claim he fatally shot 16-year-old Kajaunce Morton in a Grand Boulevard restaurant in July.

Kajaunce and his cousin were ordering food at Alice's Bar-B-Que at 65 E. 43rd St. when Lewis and an acquaintance walked out from a nearby alley and entered the restaurant with their hoods pulled over their heads about 12:20 a.m. July 18, authorities said.

Lewis, 16, aimed a gun at Kajaunce, who tried to hide behind another customer, said Assistant State's Attorney Elizabeth Novy. Lewis fired twice unsuccessfully, but the third shot hit Kajaunce in the head, Novy said.

Lewis and his acquaintance fled the scene immediately after the shooting, Novy said.

Kajaunce, of the 600 block of East 37th Street, died the next day at University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Lewis was charged with the murder this week, and on Friday Judge Laura Sullivan ordered him held without bond.

Lewis, of the 7100 block of South Cornell Avenue, was previously convicted of aggravated robbery in May and is currently serving five years probation. He also has a pending charge against him for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

He will be back in court on the murder charge Oct. 30.
