Man killed in Greater Grand Crossing; 17 others wounded across the city in weekend violence

One person was killed and at least 17 others were wounded in shootings across the city since Friday evening, authorities said.

Sterling McKenzie, 27, was shot and killed in the street in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood late Sunday, police said.

McKenzie, of the 3800 block of W. 84th St., was shot in the left eye near East 76th Street and South Greenwood Avenue and was dead on the scene, authorities said.

The most recent non-fatal shooting occurred early Monday in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side. Police released few details, but said a male was shot in the leg in the 2100 block of North Melvina Avenue about 1:10 a.m. The male’s condition was unknown.

About 30 minutes earlier a man was shot in the West Pullman neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
The man, thought to be in his 20s, was shot in the right leg about 12:40 a.m. in the 11900 block of South Stewart Avenue, police said. Information on the man’s condition was not immediately available.

Just before midnight on Sunday, a 15-year-old boy was wounded in a drive-by shooting in West Pullman neighborhood, police said.

The boy was in the 00 to 100 block of East 116th Street, on the far South Side, when gunfire erupted from a dark-colored SUV that passed him on the street about 11:50 p.m., police said. One of the bullets struck the boy in the hand. He was listed in good condition at Roseland Community Hospital, police said.

A man was shot and critically wounded in the Lawndale neighborhood about 8:40 p.m. Sunday night, police said.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, was shot in the head multiple times in the 1200 block of South Komensky Avenue, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said.

About 8 p.m. Sunday a 25-year-old man was shot on the South Side in the 2400 block of East 107th Street, police said. The man was outside when a group of males approached and at least one person opened fire, shooting the man in the backside, police said. The man was listed in good condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center.

About 10:30 p.m. Saturday, an 18-year-old man was shot once in the hip in the 800 block of East 45th Street. He was listed in good condition, but it wasn’t immediately known which hospital he was taken to, police said.

Earlier Saturday night, a man was shot in the Chatham neighborhood, police said. The 22-year-old man was shot once in the thigh about 8:15 p.m. near West 80th Street and South Stewart Avenue, and taken in “stable” condition to John H Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

About 5 p.m., a man was shot in the thigh in the 9200 block of South Bennett, police said. The 20-year-old man was taken to Christ Medical Center in “stable” condition.

Saturday afternoon, a man was shot in the arm in the West Englewood neighborhood.
The man, 27, was shot about 12:30 p.m. in the 5500 block of South Damen Avenue and taken in good condition to Holy Cross Hospital, police said.

Earlier Saturday, a woman who was dropped off at Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the backside was “extremely uncooperative” with investigators, police said.

The woman, 23, was dropped off at the hospital about 5:45 a.m. and refused to tell police where she was shot. She was listed in serious condition.

Police said the woman has gang affiliations.

A few hours earlier, a man was shot in the West Englewood neighborhood.

The 32-year-old drove himself to Mount Sinai Hospital about 2:17 a.m. after he was shot in the chin and back near West 70th Street and South Wolcott Avenue, police said. He was listed in critical condition.

About 1 a.m. Saturday, a man was shot in the foot in the 1400 block of North St. Louis Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side. The man, 19, was taken to Norwegian-American Hospital in good condition.

A 21-year-old man was shot late Friday in the South Chicago neighborhood. He was shot twice in the hip about 11:27 p.m. in the 9000 block of South Escanaba Avenue, police said. He was taken in “stable” condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

About an hour earlier, a 19-year-old man was seriously wounded in a West Side shooting.

The man was shot in the chest about 10:36 p.m. in the 3500 block of West Douglas Boulevard, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.

Friday evening, a man wrestled a gun away from his attacker after he was shot and shot him multiple times, police said.

The 21-year-old was walking with another male in the 200 block of West Root Street about 6:25 p.m. when they were approached by a gunman who fired two shots, police said. The man was shot in the arm and back, then wrestled the gun away and shot the gunman multiple times.

The 19-year-old gunman was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, where he is in custody. The 21-year-old man was also listed in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.

Both men are documented gang members, police said.

About 30 minutes earlier, a 24-year-old man was shot in the face in the 7000 block of South Aberdeen Street. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in “stable” condition, police said.
