Shamari Salter and good friend Terrence Canady were looking forward to the fall term at Parkland College in Champaign, family said.
The friends were driving home from registration when they were shot to death May 13 in the Roseland community.
Salter’s aunt, Rev. Franshonn Salter, said she last saw her nephew at a birthday celebration for his brother, Shaquille Salter, who was fatally shot last Fourth of July weekend.
“[Shamari Salter] had a mind of his own,” Franshonn Salter said. “He wasn’t influenced by people -- he influenced them.”
Franshonn Salter said her nephew, who had a 2-year-old daughter, was an aspiring musician.
The reverend said she shared a rap song she wrote for her congregation, and Shamari Salter excitedly said the two should "collab." Shamari Salter had planned to come to the church's recording studio to work with his aunt on the song, she said.
Police said three 19-year-old men were inside a vehicle in the 200 block of West 107th Street when another vehicle pulled up and a gunman inside opened fire.
Shimari Salter, of the 0 – 100 block of East 100th Place, was shot in the head and died at the scene, authorities said.
Canady, of the 11300 block of South Stewart Avenue, was shot in the head and abdomen and died at 11:22 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, authorities said.
A third man was shot in the chest and taken to Christ Medical Center in critical condition, police said.
Franshonn Salter said she believes neither brother’s death was gang related.
Nobody has been charged for either Salter murders.
Area South detectives are investigating the killings.
