Glen Phillips shot Jones while Jones talked with two other people in the 6500 block of South Sangamon Street, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Jennifer Cooper said in court Thursday.

Jones, who had been driving with his girlfriend and a friend, had stopped his car when he heard his name being called out on the evening of June 25, 2014.

When Jones, 54, stepped outside his car to talk to the two people, Phillips emerged from the rear of vehicle and confronted Jones about money he owed, Cooper said.

Phillips then shot Jones, Cooper said. Jones fell to the ground. Phillips, now 35, stood over Jones and allegedly fired several times more.

While Jones was being shot in the head and body, his girlfriend got into the driver’s seat and drove away.

Phillips shot at the car and struck the windshield, Cooper said. Once the car made it to the end of the block, Jones’ friend got out and called 911.

The friend identified Phillips in a photo array. And one of the people who had been talking to Jones before he was shot also identified Phillips as the shooter, Cooper said.

Phillips, of the 7700 block of South Bishop Street, was denied bond during a hearing Thursday.

Phillips is a graduate of Dunbar Vocational Career Academy and works as a carpenter, his attorney said.
