A woman taken into custody following the fatal stabbing of Joshua Dean last week has been released after police said she was acting in self-defense.

The 21-year-old Dean was stabbed Friday morning in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.

Officers responding to a call of a person stabbed about 8:40 a.m. at a home in the 12100 block of South Bishop found him unresponsive with a chest wound, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Dean was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 9:55 a.m., authorities said. An autopsy Saturday ruled his death a homicide.

Police said the attack was domestic-related. A woman was arrested at the scene, but police said Wednesday that she has been released without charges.

A police source said the woman acted in self-defense, and there was a history of domestic violence between the couple.
