A 17-year-old boy has been charged with killing DeAngelo Birge and wounding another man in a West Garfield Park shooting earlier this month.

The two 24-year-old men were sitting in a vehicle in the 4400 block of West Maypole about 3:15 p.m. Oct. 6 when the boy walked up, fired into the car and ran away, according to Chicago Police.

Birge was shot in the head and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 4200 block of West Jackson.

The other man also was taken to Stroger with a gunshot wound to the hand. His condition stabilized, police said.

The boy has been charged with one first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, police said. He was also charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.

The suspect’s name is not being released because of his age, police said. He was turned over to the Chicago Police Department Youth Division for processing.
