Courtney Copeland tells police officers he was shot in Belmont Cragin, then dies minutes later at hospital

Courtney Copeland walked to a couple of police officers sitting in front of 25th District headquarters in Belmont Cragin early Friday and told them he'd been shot. He was dead 45 minutes later.

About 1:15 a.m., the 22-year-old west suburban resident got out of a car in the 5500 block of West Grand Avenue and approached officers who were sitting in a squad car in front of the station, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He told them that he had been shot in the back.

Copeland was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:01 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

It was not immediately clear where the shooting took place.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday on Copeland, who lived in the 1800 block of South Austin in Cicero and had attended Jones College Prep High School.
