Ural Jaylin Durant was shot to death Friday evening in the Ashburn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

About 7:15 p.m., the 21-year-old was standing near an SUV parked in the 2400 block of West 79th Street, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Two people walked out of a nearby gangway and started shooting at the vehicle.

Durant was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:44 p.m., authorities said. His home address was unknown.

The SUV, which had been reported stolen, then sped away, but crashed into a building down the street at 79th and Artesian, police said. An unknown number of people inside the vehicle ran away.

It wasn’t clear if Durant was the intended target, but police said the 21-year-old “was not a random victim.”

No one was in custody for the shooting as of Sunday afternoon.
