Rhonda "Shon" Hughes was sleeping in her own bed Tuesday morning when a bullet shattered the window of her garden apartment in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side.
An hour later, the 40-year-old died at a hospital of the gunshot wound, though Chicago Police still don't know if she was the intended target.
Hughes was sleeping at 5:26 a.m. Tuesday in her home in the 5200 block of South King Drive, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Someone fired shots into the home from the street, and Hughes suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks, authorities said. She was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she died at 6:26 a.m., according to police and the medical examiner’s office.
Police said the shooter was definitely targeting the home, where Hughes lived with her husband and two teenage sons.
However, it was not clear if she was the intended target of the shooting. Neighbors reported hearing about five gunshots.
No one was in custody as of Thursday morning as Area Central detectives investigate.
