A man killed in a shooting Tuesday night while walking with a friend in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side has been identified as 70-year-old Leroy Moore.
Moore was walking from a store about 8:20 p.m. in the 7100 block of South State when he heard gunshots, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Police said two cars were speeding down State Street and people inside both cars were firing shots at each other.
Moore, who lived in the Jeffery Manor neighborhood on the Far South Side, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:53 p.m., authorities said.
More was retired from GE, and was married with two children and a granddaughter.
Moore's nephew was Howard Moore, assistant basketball coach at Wisconsin and former head coach at UIC.
In a Twitter post, he wrote: "Please pray for my family as my uncle, Leroy was caught in crossfire and killed in Chicago last night. I'm stunned and devastated right now."
On Facebook, he wrote: "My heart is crushed after hearing the news last night that my uncle Leroy Moore was shot and killed. For those that knew my uncle, he had a larger than life persona my biggest supporter."
No one was in custody as of Thursday morning.
