A south suburban man suffered serious head injuries when he was beaten and robbed in July in the South Loop. Early Monday, Curtis Sanderbeck died of those injuries.

Officers responding to a call of a battery at 5:16 p.m. July 17 found the 46-year-old Sanderbeck bleeding and unconscious in the 1200 block of South Canal, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A witness told police that another man had struck Sanderbeck in his head with a board, kicked him, and then took his property.

The Harvey resident was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

He died at RML Specialty Hospital at 4:14 a.m. Monday, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy Wednesday found he died of complications of head trauma suffered in the assault, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Officers initially took two suspects into custody, police said. But both were later released without being charged, and no one was in custody as of late Wednesday, police said.
