At least 11 people were killed in Chicago during the week of August 21-27, including two teenage boys; a homeless man who was beaten to death, a crime for which two men are in custody; and a woman who was shot 12 times in broad daylight in Logan Square.

A 16-year-old boy was shot to death Saturday in the East Garfield Park neighborhood whle walking home from visiting his infant son.

Theotis Luckett was shot in the back about 3:45 a.m. in the 3600 block of West Ohio, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead an hour-and-a-half later.

He lived in the Pulaski Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, authorities said. Family members said he was returning home after visiting his newborn son when he became the third person shot in the neighborhood in about five hours.

The other teenage boy was killed by an off-duty Chicago Fire Department lieutenant, who claimed the teen tried to steal his car Monday morning in the West Side Austin neighborhood. Police are investigating the shooting as a case of self-defense.

About 9:30 a.m., the 45-year-old lieutenant left his vehicle running in the 1400 block of North Lockwood, when the boy got inside and tried to drive off, according to police and Fire Department officials. The lieutenant fired his weapon at the teen, who was trying to run him over with the vehicle, authorities said.

The boy, identified as 17-year-old Charles K. Macklin, who lived in the same neighborhood, was shot in the chest and was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he was pronounced dead at 9:33 a.m., police and the medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy Tuesday showed he died of the chest wound, and his death was ruled a homicide.

The lieutenant has a concealed-carry permit and FOID card, authorities said. He was not injured, but was taken to a hospital for observation.

In perhaps the most shocking homicide, two men have been charged with beating a homeless man to death with a baseball bat and a brick Wednesday night in the Northwest Side Belmont Cragin neighborhood.

Joaquin Clara, 51, was found dead about 9 p.m. in the 5900 block of West Fullerton, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy Friday found Clara suffered blunt-force injuries to his head, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Rogelio Arroyo, a 31-year-old from the Galewood neighborhood; and Thomas Ocasio, a 46-year-old from the West Elsdon neighborhood, were both charged with first-degree murder, police said. Prosecutors claim Ocasa beat Clara, while Arroyo served as the lookout. But no motive for the crime was given.

The 33-year-old woman died Wednesday morning after she was shot 12 times in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side, police said.

About 10:30 a.m., Laquesha L. Holmes was near Spaulding and Cortland when a black Dodge Charger with tinted windows approached and a man got out and chased her down, then fired multiple shots, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Neighbors found her unresponsive and she was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 11:02 a.m., authorities said. She lived in the South Shore neighborhood. The shooter, described as a black man about 20 years old with a medium complexion and wearing a red T-shirt, got back into the Charger and took off, police said.
