WEEK IN REVIEW: 16 people fatally shot, including 4 in one gang-related rifle attack in Brighton Park

At least 16 people were killed during the week of September 11-17 in Chicago shootings, which included a gang-fueled incident on the Southwest Side that left four people, including a pregnant woman, dead.

And when it was all over, the city's homicide total for the year stood at 499, with the 500th to follow shortly when a man who was shot late Sunday died the following day.

The four, a pregnant woman, the father of her child, that man's brother and a friend, were shot to death Friday evening in a rifle attack the Brighton Park neighborhood. The victims were found in a car about 8:35 p.m. in the 4700 block of South Fairfield, Chicago Police said.

Michelle Adrian Cano, 21; Joel Sandoval, 24; Miguel Sandoval, 27; and Ida Arvizu, 28, were all pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Friends said the Sandovals were brothers, and Joel Sandoval was the father of Arvizu's unborn son and 7-year-old daughter.

Chicago Police Sgt. Al Stinites said officers were responding to a call of shots fired when they found the four dead in the vehicle. Patrols in the 9th District were being stepped up Friday night in response to the killings, believed to be the result of an escalating turf war between two local gangs. No one was in custody.

In other shootings last week:

  • A woman was killed and two people were wounded in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood Sunday evening on the Southwest Side. About 8:20 p.m., they were sitting inside a parked vehicle in the 6000 block of South Richmond when a man got out of a silver vehicle and fired shots, according to police. The woman, identified as 42-year-old Catherine Barnett, was struck in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Barnett lived on the same block as the shooting. A 37-year-old man was shot in the chest, and was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital, police said. A bullet grazed a third person in the nose, but they refused treatment and were uncooperative with officers, police said.
  • A 23-year-old man was killed Sunday afternoon when he was shot multiple times in the Southwest Side Little Village neighborhood. Juan Bahena Jr. was in a vehicle at 4:32 p.m. when someone in a tan minivan opened fire in the 2400 block of South Western, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Bahena was shot in the neck, thigh and buttocks; and pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. He lived in the Southwest Side West Elsdon neighborhood.
  • A 30-year-old man was shot to death early Sunday in the West Side Austin neighborhood. About 3:05 a.m., Anthony White was in the 500 block of North Leclaire when someone shot him in the chest from an SUV, police said. White was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died, police said. He lived in the Southwest Side Lawndale neighborhood.
  • A 41-year-old man was shot to death during a fight early Sunday in the South Shore neighborhood. About 3 a.m., Jesse A. Bennett was in an argument with another man who pulled out a handgun and fired shots in the 2700 block of East 75th Street, according to police. Bennett was shot in the face and was pronounced dead at the scene. He lived in Chicago Lawn.
  • A man has been charged with fatally shooting another man multiple times in the head during an argument Saturday evening in the Far South Side Jeffery Manor neighborhood. Delton Bates, 42, was charged with murder for the shooting in his driveway in the 9700 block of South Merrion, according to police. He and Darrius Buckley, 33, were arguing at 8:47 p.m. when Bates allegedly took out a gun and shot him multiple times in the head, police and the medical examiner’s office said. Buckley, who lived nearby, was pronounced dead at the scene. Bates was arrested in the driveway about 10 minutes after the shooting.
  • A man was killed in a shooting Saturday morning in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side. Maurice King, 21, was walking to his vehicle at 10:11 a.m. in the 2500 block of West 58th when a male approached and fired shots at him, according to police. King suffered two gunshot wounds to each shoulder and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

    About 6 hours later, Anthony Culpepper was arrested after he was seen driving King's car, which had been taken after the shooting, police said. The 18-year-old was later charged with first-degree murder and ordered held without bond.

  • A man was shot dead Friday morning in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side. Officers responding to a call of shots fired at 11:14 a.m. found 23-year-old Micah Brown lying unresponsive in the 6400 block of South Talman with a gunshot wound to his chest, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. He had been shot by the someone in a passing vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene. He lived in the Gresham neighborhood.
  • A man was shot to death early Thursday in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. Officers responded to a call of shots fired at 2:09 a.m. and found 24-year-old Dantrell Morgan in a grassy area of the sidewalk in the 7100 block of South Carpenter, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. He had been shot in the left side of his body. Morgan was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead about 8 hours later.
  • A 40-year-old man was fatally shot early Wednesday on the Near West Side. At 12:03 a.m., Jawon "Doola" Garrett was with a group of males in the 2300 block of West Madison when two males walked up and fired shots, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Garrett suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body, and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later. He lived in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
  • A man was found shot to death early Tuesday in Austin. Officers responding to reports of a person down at 4:42 a.m. in the 5000 block of West Monroe found 32-year-old Isaac L. Hughes-Allen lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the face, according to police and the medical examiner's office. Hughes-Allen was pronounced dead at the scene. He lived in the Northwest Side Belmont Cragin neighborhood.
  • A 25-year-old west suburban man was fatally shot in the head Tuesday afternoon in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. Angelo Terrell was standing outside at 3:38 p.m. in the 300 block of South Kilbourn when another male walked up, pulled a handgun and opened fire, according to police and the medical examiner's office. Terrell, a Bellwood resident, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than 30 minutes later.
  • A 17-year-old boy was shot to death early Tuesday in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side. Antonio Monteza was at a gas station about 2:40 a.m. in the 7500 block of North Sheridan when another male walked up and opened fire, striking him in the head and abdomen, according to police and the medical examiner's office. Monteza was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. He lived in the same neighborhood.
