Downstate resident Perry Stroger was shot to death Thursday afternoon during a fight in the West Side Austin neighborhood, but police say the man suspected of shooting him has been released without charges.
The 48-year-old Stroger was approached by a 32-year-old man about 12:30 p.m. Thurday in the 5800 block of West Cortland, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
The two men got into a fight, and at some point, the younger man pulled out a gun and fired shots.
Stroger, a Chicago native who had moved to Urbana, was struck in the head, and taken to Community First Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
The 32-year-old was taken into custody for questioning, police said. But on Saturday, police said he had been released without charges.
