Alexis Salgado and Manuel Mendoza were shot to death Saturday morning while driving in the Pilsen neighborhood on the Near West Side, and police say it happened after one of them flashed a gun at someone on the street.

Salgado, 20, and Mendoza, 18, were driving about 10:50 a.m. in the 1800 block of South Throop, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

They flashed a gun at someone standing on the street, but that person pulled out their own gun and fired shots into the vehicle, police said.

Both men were hit.

Salgado suffered a gunshot wound to his body and tried to get out of the vehicle, but collapsed, authorities said.

Mendoza, a Little Village resident, was shot in the neck.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooter was not in custody as of early Wednesday, police said.
