An autopsy showed that Toriella Turpin, a one-month-old girl found unresponsive Saturday morning in her South Shore neighborhood home, had suffered blows to the head.

Officers responded about 6 a.m. to the 6700 block of South East End Avenue, where the infant was reported unresponsive, according to Chicago Police.

Toriella was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she died at 6:42 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy Sunday found the girl died of blunt force injuries to the head from an assault, the medical examiner’s office said. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Area Central detectives have opened a death investigation, but additional details were not provided.

An Illinois Department of Child and Family Services spokeswoman said Sunday the agency was also investigating the girl’s death, but would not provide further information.
