A man who received a call claiming his sister had been beaten has been charged with fatally shooting her boyfriend, Lamont Alexander, in the North Lawndale neighborhood a year ago.

Alonzo Redditt, 21, faces one count of first-degree murder for the Dec. 4, 2015, shooting of the 23-year-old Alexander, according the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

Redditt got a call saying that his sister had been beaten by her boyfriend, Alexander, and went to confront him, prosecutors said during Redditt’s bond hearing Thursday.

The men got into a fight shortly before 4 p.m. in the street in the 4100 block of West 21st Street. Another man approached and grabbed Alexander from behind, pulling him away from Redditt, police and prosecutors said.

The man who helped mold him into a 20-0 professional boxer said “he was going to be a world champion,” but instead, 25-year-old Ed “Bad Boy” Brown is one of the latest victims of Chicago’s violence.

The child of Garfield Park, who wore a Chicago flag uniform whenever he left town to fight, was shot early Saturday within half a mile of his home, according to Chicago Police and his co-manager, Mike Cericola.

Brown was sitting in a parked vehicle with his a 19-year-old woman about 1:10 a.m. in the 3200 block of West Warren Boulevard when a silver vehicle pulled up and someone inside shot at them, police said. Brown was struck in the head, and the woman, his cousin, was hit in the left leg. Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Brown was initially put on life support, but was pronounced dead at 4:04 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 500 block of South Lavergne.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help his family with funeral expenses.

The woman was listed in good condition, authorities said.

Brown lost his mother in the notorious E2 Chicago nightclub stampede, Cericola said, and his father was imprisoned around the same time. So it fell to Brown’s grandmother to raise him — along with Chicago’s Park District and boxing community.

The result was a sweet kid who unleashed his anger, and power, only when the bell rang. Eventually, Brown’s talent in the boxing ring caught the attention of Las Vegas’ Cameron Dunkin, who managed the super lightweight along with Cericola.

He turned professional about two years ago, and had compiled a 20-0 record with 16 knockouts. His first pro fight was Dec. 12, 2014, in Cicero, where he beat Dontre King on a TKO. His last fight was Nov. 11 in Philadelphia, where he beat Albert Mensah by unanimous decision. His complete boxing stats and results can be found at BoxRec.com.

Cericola said the boxing ring is often “the scariest place” for people, but it was the “safest” for Brown. He also said the fighter who grew up on the West Side was “done” with any gang involvement.

Brown was returning home from a gym early Saturday when he was shot, according to Cericola. He felt he needed to go to the gym to run, the manager said, because he didn’t feel safe running on the streets.

Cericola added, “you can’t walk down the streets, let alone run.”

“You can’t sit on your porch, no matter who you are, especially on the west side of Chicago,” he said. “You can’t take your garbage out. You can’t do anything.”

No one was in custody for the shooting as of Monday afternoon.

Mother just looking for justice for Tykina Ali, the girl who loved to laugh and made sure others laughed with her

Tykina Ali loved to laugh, family members recall.

And her mother, Tykia Watts, said the 20-year-old was persistent at getting others to laugh with her.

“If you was down, she would bring you up,” Watts said. “If you would see her down, then you’d know something was really wrong.”

Ali, of the 1600 block of West Ogden, was shot in the head Aug. 23 while riding in a vehicle in the 2600 block of South Kedzie, Chicago Police said.

She later died after being brought to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police said she had been a passenger in a vehicle when someone in another vehicle nearby fired shots.

On the day of Ali’s death, more than 200 people gathered with balloons, candles and posters for a memorial outside her elementary school, John Hay Community Academy, her mother said.

Even more people attended her funeral on Sept. 3.

“I got 300 obituary [cards] for her funeral,” Watts said. “Everyone didn’t even get one.”

Watts recalled the weekend before her daughter's shooting. She had braided Tykina’s hair. On Saturday, she had dressed up—despite there being no formal occasion.

“She was happy,” Watts said “To see my daughter happy was just beautiful.”

That Monday evening was the last time Watts saw her daughter. Ali told her mother she loved her, said goodbye and headed out of the family’s home.

“That was it,” Watts said. “...That was it.”

Watts said she knew of no leads in the investigation of her daughter’s fatal shooting, adding she was frustrated with notions that the shooting was gang related.

“They are trying to make it a case of gang violence ... my daughter was not in a gang,” Watts said. “The main thing I want is justice for my baby. She wasn’t a bad child and she didn't deserve to go through what she went through.”

Ali graduated from Austin Career Academy in 2014. She began working for Blistex in July, and was considering attending Harold Washington College to study nursing.

Blistex announced it had made a donation to Ceasefire Illinois, a foundation that works to prevent gun violence, in honor of her death.

“We join her family and friends in morning her passing,” a statement from the company said.

No one was in custody in connection with the shooting as Area Central detectives investigate. It was not known if she was the intended target.

He was shot in the head and was initially taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, police said at the time.

Williams, 36, was pronounced dead at 3:57 p.m. Nov. 19 at the long-term rehabilitation center in west suburban Elmwood Park where he’d been living, authorities said. An autopsy found he died of complications from the gunshot wound and ruled his death a homicide.

Police could not immediately provide an update on the investigation Tuesday night.
