An Iowa man killed one brother and wounded another during a Christmas Day shooting at a relative's North Lawndale home.

The family had gathered for a Christmas party at a relative's home in the 1900 block of South Trumbull Avenue despite an ongoing dispute among the brothers about the treatment of their sick mother, who died about a month earlier, prosecutors said.

When 29-year-old Lorenzo Jones arrived, family members heard him say there were too many "phony people" at the party and if his brothers showed up he was going to kill them, prosecutors said. He then went to a van parked down the street.

When Dennis Jones and his 42-year-old brother pulled up about 6 p.m., Lorenzo Jones exited the van with an AK 47 and screamed "body bitch," prosecutors said.

Lorenzo Jones walked towards the house, entered the front gate and opened fire, prosecutors said.

Dennis Jones, 52, of the 4900 block of West Augusta Boulevard, was shot in the chest and leg, authorities said. He was declared dead hours later at Mount Sinai Hospital.Dennis Jones / Photo from Facebook

Lorenzo Jones, of the 800 block of Benton Court in Iowa City, was arrested in Iowa and later charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery for the discharge of a firearm, authorities said.

Lorenzo Jones pleaded guilty to robbery in 2005, and has numerous out of county convictions, including one for felony battery in 2008, prosecutors said.

On Wednesday, Judge James Brown ordered Lorenzo Jones held without bond.

Thomas Porter was ordered held without bond Thursday after prosecutors claim he fatally shot Trevon Williams during an Auburn Gresham dice game last month.

Porter had invited several friends over for a Dec. 23 dice game at his home in the 7800 block of South Lowe Avenue, said Assistant State's Attorney Akash Vyas.

Prior to the game, the group was hanging out on the front porch, where several people saw Porter with a handgun, Vyas said.

At one point during the game, witnesses heard a gunshot then saw Porter, 19, with the gun in his hands and fellow participant Williams on the floor, Vyas said.

Other members of the dice game called 911 and emergency personnel found the unarmed Williams shot in the chest inside the home, Vyas said. Williams, 20, of the 6400 block of South Lowe Avenue, died at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The three other people playing dice identified Porter as the shooter, and he was arrested Wednesday, Vyas said.

On Thursday, Judge James Brown ordered Porter held without bond.

Anthony Jackson convicted of murder for beating Sanchez Mixon to death on CTA platform

Chicago Sun-Times

A middle-aged college student from the South Side was convicted of first-degree murder Thursday for stomping a fellow CTA commuter to death on a Green Line platform.

At least three commuters testified to seeing Anthony Jackson beat Sanchez Mixon in an unprovoked attack in the 300 block of East 43rd Street on March 16, 2013.

When one man from across the tracks at the 43rd Street station yelled at Jackson to stop, Jackson looked up and tried to justify the deadly assault by screaming, "I had to get crazy on him. I had to do it. He was following me," Assistant State’s Attorney Yolanda Lippert said.

Jackson, 47, has a Chicago Police officer brother. His other brother, George Jackson III, a former federal prosecutor, was one of two lawyers representing him during his jury trial this week before Judge Stanley Sacks.

George Jackson III said his brother only went after the 37-year-old Mixon because Mixon tried to rob him. Anthony Jackson also felt a metal object through a bag Mixon carried, and assumed it was a gun, the defense attorney reminded jurors.

Prosecutors rejected claims that Mixon put his hand in Antony Jackson’s pocket or gave him any other reason to lash out to defend himself.

It was Anthony Jackson who started the physical contact by punching Mixon in the head after asking Mixon, "Hey why are you looking at me like that?" Lippert said.

Anthony Jackson, of the 500 block of East 67th Street, eventually knocked Mixon to the ground and started stomping and jumping on his head with both feet before other commuters called 911, prosecutors said.

The vicious beating was captured on CTA cameras.

The video footage "literally captured the face of death," Lippert said in her closing arguments Thursday.

Anthony Jackson, a single father of five, was on his way to DePaul University -- where he was studying computer science -- before the deadly attack.

Anthony Jackson, whose family said he had a history of mental illness, turned himself in to police two days later.

Dennis Jones spent Christmas Day making pizza and watching television with his daughter.

The 52-year-old Austin neighborhood resident was shot dead later that night during a domestic dispute at his sister's North Lawndale home.

Prosecutors said Jones and his two brothers had gotten into an ongoing dispute over the care of their recently deceased mother. On Christmas night, one of the brothers, 29-year-old Lorenzo Jones, opened fire during a family gathering in the 1900 block of South Trumbull Avenue -- killing Dennis Jones and wounding his 42-year-old brother, prosecutors said.

Lorenzo Jones, of Iowa City, was charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond while he awaits trial.

Earlier that day, Dennis Jones and his daughter, 25-year-old Denise Jones, watched "Roots" and discussed the mini-series and slavery.

“The last thing he said to me was, ‘Baby call me when you get the chance, I love you,’” Denise Jones said.

Dennis Jones had served 17 years in prison and was released about a year ago, according to his daughter, who said he was attending church and was looking for a job.

Denise Jones said her father tried to make up for lost time with his family. She said he would frequently cook meals for her, give her relationship advice and encourage her to achieve her life goals.

Denise Jones says one of the things she will remember most about her father is his personality.

“He was a jokester. He always liked to play around and talk,” Denise Jones said.
