Two men were convicted of murder Wednesday for a 2013 shooting that killed a 14-year-old boy on the Southwest Side.

Michael Orozco was on his way to an ice cream shop with friends about 4:30 p.m. April 7 when he was fatally shot in the chest in the 2200 block of South Leavitt Street, authorities said.

Prosecutors said Javier Garza, 19, shot Michael in an apparent attempt to avenge his father’s murder.

Both he and another suspect, 21-year-old Damien Garza, were arrested after police on the scene radioed a description of the gunman’s vehicle and other officers located it nearby, police said.

The Garzas are not related, Javier Garza’s mother said after a 2013 court hearing in the case.

A third male was initially taken into custody and later released.Michael Orozco / Family photo

Authorities said both suspects and Michael were in gangs -- a claim their families denied.

Both men were convicted Wednesday of various counts of murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery and aggravated discharge of a firearm following trials that began Monday before Judge James Linn, according to court records.

Damien Garza, of the 4500 block of Wood Street, will next appear in court May 5. Javier Garza, of the 2900 block of North 75th Court in Elmwood Park, will be back in court May 7.

Albert Turnage talked about going back to school because he wanted to be a positive role model for his son, his former foster parent said.

Turnage will never get the chance to watch his son grow up after the 23-year-old was fatally shot in the 1700 block of West Touhy Avenue on his son's sixth birthday, police and family said.

Officers responding to a call of a person shot found Turnage and another man in an alley about 4:10 a.m. Feb. 25, authorities said.

Turnage, of the 1700 block of West Greenleaf Avenue, was shot in the chest and died at Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston about two hours later, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The other man, 30, was shot multiple times and was treated at Saint Francis Hospital, police said.

"I know for a fact that it was not anything that was targeted against him, he was not in a gang," said Turnage's foster parent Katie Cangemi. "I do think that it was an act of violence related to the problems in Rogers Park."

Cangemi met Turnage when he was just 11 years old, and provided emotional support during the boy's battle with cancer, she said.

"He was in need of somebody to be with him through chemo everyday," Cangemi said. "It didn’t seem right that a kid with cancer should go through that alone."

Cangemi said the two would play "I Spy" and watch movies while he was undergoing treatment.

"He let me into his life at a really vulnerable time," Cangemi said. "When somebody is facing possible death, that’s when we really became family."

Turnage had several surgeries, and doctors were amazed at how he kept a positive attitude and continued to tell jokes and smile, she said.

The cancer was in remission when Cangemi got her foster parent license while Turnage was in eighth grade, she said.

"I just knew that being bounced around the system ... wasn’t good for him" Cangemi said. "I feel like what he needed was a home, and he trusted me enough to provide that ... we were already [like] family."

Turnage was excited to move in with Cangemi and called her "fairy godmother," she said. Albert Turnage with his son, Jayden / Submitted photo

Turnage eventually dropped out of high school to help raise his son, Jayden, Cangemi said. He eventually went back to school and earned his diploma because he wanted to be a positive role model for his son. He had recently talked about going back to school to become a welder, she said.

"I’ve never seen a father so involved -- Jayden got so many hugs and kisses," Cangemi said. "There was no doubt for his love in his son."

After Turnage left the Department of Children and Family Services system, he remained close with Cangemi and the two would often meet up for pizza, she said.

Cangemi and Turange’s family created an online fundraiser (http://www.gofundme.com/AlbertforJayden) to ensure an education in Jayden’s future.

Pair charged in death of woman featured in Chicago Magazine

Chicago Sun-Times

Tiara Groves’ death was featured in a Chicago Magazine article last year, which focused on how authorities reclassify homicides -- which, in turn, skews crime statistics.

The 20-year-old’s family believes she was murdered.

And, indeed, Groves’ death was considered a murder until Dec. 18, 2013, when Chicago Police changed the matter from a homicide investigation to a noncriminal death investigation after the Cook County medical examiner’s office determined the cause of death to be a homicide by “unspecified means,” according to the magazine story.

On Friday, Groves’ neighbor along with a man who goes by the nickname “Wicked” appeared in court to face concealment of death charges tied to the Austin woman’s last days.

“They got away with murder,” Groves’ sister Kenyatta Groves said after Leondra Martin and Desmond Collins’ bond hearing.

Martin was caught on surveillance video arguing with Tiara Groves at Austin Liquors in Cicero on July 14, 2013 -- the last day Groves was seen alive, Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Karr said.

Martin allegedly admitted to detectives that after Groves overdosed, she had watched as Groves’ body was wrapped in a sheet and driven from a hotel in Cicero to a home before it was dumped in warehouse, in the 4600 block of West Arthington Street.

Groves’ naked, decomposed body was found nine days later, Karr said.

There was a loosely tied gag tied around Groves’ head and pieces of wire and a piece of skin next to her body, Karr said. A chair with similar wire was near Groves, Karr said.

Collins’ DNA matched the DNA found on the wires and Groves’ fingernails, Karr said.

The Medical Examiner concluded that the cause of death was “undetermined,” but that the manner of death was a homicide based on the condition of the body and the nature of surroundings where the body was found, Karr said.

Groves, who had heroin in her system, could have died from a drug overdose, but the Medical Examiner’s Office also said it could not rule out asphyxiation.

Collins, of the 1500 block of South Tripp Avenue, was arrested Wednesday.Leondra Martin / Photo from Chicago Police

Martin, who had since moved to Waukesha, Wis., was arrested on a warrant the same day.

Collins, who has several felony convictions, also has been charged with failing to register as a sex offender for a 1995 case in which he tied a 10-year-old girl’s hand to a bedpost before assaulting her, Karr said.

Judge Maria Kuriakos Cecil ordered Collins, 38, held in lieu of $350,000 bond.

Martin, a 30-year-old mother of two, was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bond.

Groves’ mother and siblings, who were at Friday’s hearing, are upset that Martin and Collins aren’t facing more severe charges.

The family said Groves wasn’t a drug abuser and drank alcohol only for fun.

Although they didn’t know Collins, the family said they knew Martin; they said she had lived next door and always came over to eat.

When Groves disappeared, they said Martin pretended to be concerned.

“She would ask, ‘Did you all find her yet?’ knowing exactly where she was,” Kenyatta Groves said.

Elijah Moore and another man were fatally shot when gunfire erupted outside a Bucktown nightclub early Monday.

Security guards at Dolphin Chicago kicked out a group of men for fighting in the club, police said.

The group was standing outside on the sidewalk in the 2200 block of North Ashland Avenue when shots rang out, police said.

A 34-year-old man shot multiple times and a 41-year-old man shot in the chest died at the scene, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatalities, but their names were not released Monday morning.

A 26-year-old man shot in the left wrist was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment, police said.

Family identified the 41-year-old man as Elijah Moore.

Moore, who lived downtown, had three children, including a 7-year-old daughter, family said.

"He was a good man," said Moore's uncle, Thomas Gooch. "He took care of his kids, took care of his mom, worked hard. I’m numb."

Darris Kelly, a 33-year-old West Side man inside the club when the gunfire erupted, said between five and seven people got into a fight and were being removed when he heard at least seven gunshots.

"There was a fight, then we heard shots and everybody hit the floor," Kelly said. "It was definitely scary. Chicago is crazy."

Alderman wants crackdown after killings outside Bucktown club; city will try to shut Dolphin down

Bucktown Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd) demanded Monday that Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration crack the whip against bars and nightclubs with a history of police complaints after a nightclub fight spilled out into the street and triggered the fatal shooting of two people.

The men got into a fight about 3:10 a.m. Monday inside Dolphin Chicago in the 2200 block of North Ashland Avenue and were escorted out of the club by security guards, according to police. They were standing in a crowd on the sidewalk outside when shots rang out.

Waguespack’s ward includes the Dolphin, a frequent target of neighbor complaints. The alderman wrote on his Facebook page that the nightclub, which holds a 4 a.m. liquor license, should have been closed long ago because it has been the target of chronic neighbor complaints.

“If Rahm and staff would do what they were asked several times, they would have pulled their license,” Waguespack wrote.

However, in a follow-up interview, Waguespack was far less pointed in his criticism of the Emanuel administration.

“I’m not holding him responsible for the shooting. That’s not what I’m saying. But he needs to tell his [liquor control] commissioner to drop the hammer on these places as best they can and not delay so we have more incidents like this,” Waguespack, who has endorsed Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, said Monday.

“The phones are ringing off the hook. People are calling extremely angry knowing this place has had constant problems. ... They’re wondering why they’ve had constant problems and the place is still not shut down. I’m just mad because I’ve asked these commissioners repeatedly to do their jobs and nothing happens. Then, we get another shooting, another deleterious impact hearing and still, nothing happens. [Emanuel] is not responsible. But, if we pushed people and really forced them to shut `em down — that’s where his commissioners have to step up.”

Mayoral spokesperson Elizabeth Langsdorf responded to Waguespack’s demand for a crackdown with an emailed statement promising to do just that.

“The city of Chicago has continued to actively enforce at the Dolphin and, based on the two homicides last night, will bring a new case against them seeking to shut them down,” Langsdorf wrote.

“The city was able to close the business in 2010, but per a court order it was allowed to reopen. Since the business was reopened, we have been unable to shut it down again because the Circuit Court has found the business to be in compliance, but we have continued to aggressively enforce against this establishment.”

City Hall sources said the Dolphin “was written up 14 times” since 2006 -- and fined an unspecified amount — for a host of violations that range from over-occupancy to operating after hours and failure to notify police of criminal conduct.

In the wake of Monday’s fatal shooting, the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection and Local Liquor Commissioner Greg Steadman are reviewing police reports to determine the path for charges that will be forwarded to the Law Department for filing with the License Discipline Commission. In addition to police citations, inspections will be scheduled by the Departments of Buildings and Public Health to ensure compliance.

Records show that Hodo Menetti, who is now deceased, and was the father of the current owner of the Dolphin, contributed $500 to Waguespack in November 2011.

The nightclub itself donated $2,000 to Waguespack in 2008.

Sam Menetti, current owner of the club, could not be reached for comment.

In Monday morning’s incident, one man, age 34, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body, and a 41-year-old man was shot in the chest. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatalities but no other details were released.

A 26-year-old man shot in the left wrist was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

The slain 41-year-old man was identified by family members as downtown Chicago resident Elijah Moore, a father to three children, including a 7-year-old daughter.

“He was a good man,” said Thomas Gooch, who said he was Moore’s uncle. “He took care of his kids, took care of his mom, worked hard… I’m numb.”

Darris Kelly, a 33-year-old West Side man who said he was inside the club, said between five and seven people got into a fight and were being removed when he heard at least seven gunshots ring out.

“There was a fight, then we heard shots and everybody hit the floor,” Kelly said. “It was definitely scary. Chicago is crazy.”

Waguespack disclosed that Emanuel approached him at a City Council meeting in August or September of last year about another bar in Waguespack’s ward with a 4 a.m. liquor license. At the time, the mayor was holding a note from an area resident demanding the immediate shut down of a late-night bar in Roscoe Village.

On that day, Waguespack said he brought up three places, including Dolphin, and asked the mayor to crack the regulatory whip.

“I specifically said, `Tell your commissioner to get these places in order.’ What we wanted to do was get the hearings going and have the liquor commissioner hold the hearings to shut these places down. The work had already been done by police. If you look at the record on this place and other late-night bars, police are constantly responding and neighbors are saying, `What does it take–for someone to get shot to close this place down?’ ” Waguespack said.Elijah Moore / Submitted photo

Elijah Moore / Submitted photo

Waguespack noted that the city’s so-called “public nuisance ordinance” allows three violent acts within 12 months before an operator can have his or her license revoked.

“Strictly enforce the code or strengthen the code to shut these places down or rein them in. We’re losing police resources because they have to focus on these places all the time and the neighbors bear the brunt of all the problems: shootings, stabbings, fights, garbage–all of the quality-of-life issues,” the alderman said.

During City Council budget hearings last fall, aldermen put Liquor Commissioner Greg Steadman on the hot seat about problem bars and their impact on area residents.

Waguespack was among the aldermen complaining on that day. But, he was not the only one. He was joined by a parade of colleagues, including downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) and by retiring Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd).

Fioretti finished fourth in the Feb. 24 mayoral election with Waguespack’s support. In Round 2, Waguespack, a leader of the City Council’s Progressive Caucus, made the switch to Garcia.

He will receive credit for more than two years spent behind bars while awaiting trail, according to court records.

Prosecutors said the pair belonged to the same motorcycle club, and Guardiola had picked up Rivera hours earlier so they could go to a strip club.

After leaving the club, Guardiola got into his car as Rivera walked ahead down the street, prosecutors said.

Guardiola told his friend to get into his car, and eventually called a mutual friend where he said what he would do to Rivera if Rivera kept walking along Cicero Avenue, prosecutors said.

Rivera, 31, called the same friend before walking to a parking lot in the 100 block of South Cicero Avenue, where Guardiola got out of his car, shot Rivera in the head and drove away, prosecutors said.

Abdullah Aljohani was ordered held without bond Thursday after prosecutors claim he stabbed a relative to death early Sunday in their Albany Park home.

Aljohani, 27, was charged with first-degree murder in the early Sunday stabbing death of relative Talal Aljohani, authorities said.

Assistant State's Attorney Akash Vyas said a neighbor heard the men, who are "often referred to as brothers," fighting in their home in the 5000 block of North Harding Avenue about 4 a.m. Sunday.

The neighbor went to check on the brothers, but Abdullah Aljohani said everything was fine and shut the door before the neighbor could speak, Vyas said.

When the neighbor came back later, and Abdullah Aljohani said Talal Aljohani was using the bathroom even though the neighbor could see the bathroom was empty, Vyas said.

When the neighbor demanded to see 19-year-old Abdullah Aljohani, Abdullah Aljohani shut the door, Vyas said.

The neighbor then called 911, but when police arrived Abdullah Aljohani only opened the door slightly, said everything was fine and shut the door, Vyas said.

The officers tried knocking again for several minutes but no one responded, prosecutors said.

Officers then went to the back of the building and found the garage door, back gate and back door “wide open,” Vyas said.

The officers went inside and found Talal Aljohani stabbed to death on a mattress, Vyas said. Police recovered a knife next to his body.

By the time police found the body, Abdullah Aljohani had fled to a friend’s home, where he asked for money and clothing, Vyas said.

Abdullah Aljohani told the friend that “he was in trouble” and was running from the police, according to Vyas, who said noted Abdullah Aljohani left his passport at home.

Police issued a warrant for Abdullah Aljohani’s arrest and officers found him walking iwth his fiance's brother in the 4000 block of West Lawrence Avenue on Tuesday, Vyas said.

When spotted by police, Abdullah Aljohani attempted to run away but was arrested a short time later, according to Vyas, who said Abdullah Aljohani was wearing bloody clothing when arrested.

Vyas claimed Abdullah Aljohani admitted to his fiance’s brother that he cut Talal Aljohani with a knife.

Officers later found Talal Aljohani’s phone, wallet and an ID in the fiance’s brother’s bedroom, Vyas said.

A public defender said Abdullah Aljohani moved to the United States in 2013 from Saudi Arabia and has no intention to returning. He is enrolled at Northeastern Illinois University, where he is taking English classes.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered Abdullah Aljohani held without bond and issued a next court date of April 7.
