At least 12 people were killed in the wake of Chicago violence last week, including a 13-week-old boy run down by a vehicle police say was fleeing the scene of an earlier fatal shooting on the South Side.
On Saturday, 13-month-old Dillan Harris was run down by a vehicle fleeing a deadly gang shooting in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side.
Dillan, who was in a stroller, was with his mother and two older sisters waiting for a bus to go to 63rd Street Beach when the westbound car, which Chicago Police said was fleeing a fatal shooting in the 7700 block of South Kingston, swerved and hit the child.
The mother, who declined to giver her name, said she tried to push all of her kids out of the way but didn’t have enough time to get the 13-month-old clear of the danger.
Dillan was taken to University of Chicago's Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
On Monday, 21-year-old Antoine Watkins was charged with murder for driving the vehicle, according to police.
The earlier shooting on South Kingston took the life of 22-year-old Marvin Carr's murder, according to police.
Carr, who went by his rapper moniker "Capo," was shot in the hip and back in a possible drive-by about 1:45 p.m. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later died, police said.
Capo, a member of Chicago rapper Chief Keef’s “Glo Gang,” had just returned from a recording session in Los Angeles, his manager said.
The last killing of the week was 19-year-old Pierre Dobyne, who was shot to death in a drive-by Sunday afternoon in the South Chicago neighborhood.
Dobyne was standing in the 8300 block of South Baker at 3:30 p.m. when a minivan approached, and someone got out and fired shots, police said. The shooter then got back in the van, which drove off in an unknown direction.
Dobyne, of the 3300 block of South Archer, was shot in the chest and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later died, authorities said.
Earlier Saturday, a man was killed and two others were injured in a shooting in the West Side Austin neighborhood, police said.
The men, ages 24, 26 and 27, were standing outside about 3:15 a.m. in the 200 block of South Laramie when they got into an altercation and shots were fired, police said.
The 26-year-old was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His identity had not been released as of Monday.
The 27-year-old suffered gunshot wounds to both legs and was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. The youngest man was shot in the leg and also taken to Mount Sinai, where his condition was stabilized.
Just an hour earlier, Tarvares Herron was shot to death in a vehicle stopped at a red light in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
At around 2:15 a.m. the 23-year-old was in an SUV at a red light in the 6900 block of South Lafayette when he started talking to two women in a black car that was also stopped at the light.
It was then that a man in the back seat of the black car pulled a gun and fired, hitting Herron in the head, police said. The black car then sped away.
Herron, of the 5900 block of South Wabash, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the medical examiner’s office said.
Police are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.
On Friday, Keith C. Dixon was shot to death in the same block of Grand Crossing on the South Side where another man was fatally shot by a police the day before.
The shooting happened at around 11:10 p.m., police said.
Officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 7500 block of South Langley found the 25-year-old on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Dixon was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where he died of a gunshot wound to the chest, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He lived in the 600 block of East 76th Street.
Late Thursday evening, 17-year-old Kimythe Hubbard was shot to death in the Woodlawn neighborhood.
He was walking in the 6600 block of South Blackstone just after 10 p.m. when a gunman walked up and shot him repeatedly, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:24 p.m. He resided in the 2900 block of South King Drive.
Northwest Indiana resident, Jovan Dovantae Hopkins, 22, was killed only 50 minutes earlier.
Hopkins was shot to death when an unidentified individual came out of of a nearby gangway and fired several shot, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 9:33 p.m. He lived in the 4900 block of Walsh Avenue in East Chicago, Ind.
Joseph Gaithers was shot and killed on Wednesday afternoon in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.
The 35-year-old was shot in the head about 1:15 p.m. while talking with someone in the 8000 block of South King Drive, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.
Gaithers, of the 6300 block of South Calumet, was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 5:31 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
A 25-year-old man was found shot to death early Wednesday in the 3200 block of West Huron, and later identified as Timothy T. Williams.
At about 2:10 a.m. Wednesday, officers found Williams on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds in the 3200 block of West Huron, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. After being taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, Williams was pronounced dead, police said.
Samson Pension-Smith, 20, was shot and killed Tuesday morning in the South Shore neighborhood.
Officers responding to a call in the 7900 block of South Chappel at 9:45 a.m. found a man shot multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen, police said.
The shooting scene was near Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
Pension-Smith, of the 7800 block of South Kingston, was taken to Stroger Hospital, and pronounced dead at 10:51 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. He died of a gunshot wound to the flank and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the autopsy.
Another teen was killed just blocks away in the area on Monday. Abayomi Okanlawan, 16, was standing outside in the 7900 block of South Merrill with a friend around 5:30 p.m. when shots were fired, leaving Okanlawan dead and another teen wounded.
The other teen was shot in the back and was taken to South Shore Hospital in serious condition, police said.
