Joseph Thrane was in a black Saturn SUV with fellow Latin Kings flashing gang signs before he gunned down Ruben Feliciano in the Humboldt Park neighborhood May 24, authorities said.

Feliciano, a car enthusiast, was driving around in his car while his three other friends followed in three separate vehicles, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Akash Vyas said.

The SUV that Thrane was in drove by the group and then partially blocked the path of the Feliciano’s car, which was leading the others, Vyas said.

Thrane, who goes by the nickname “White Boy,” got out of the back passenger side of the SUV, threw a bottle at Feliciano’s car and tried to get inside before running back to the SUV, Vyas said.

Feliciano was able to drive away but the SUV trailed him and rammed into the back of his car while he was stopped in traffic around the 3300 block of West Division Street, prosecutors said.

The SUV rammed Feliciano’s car again, causing it to spin, Vyas said.

At this point, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Thrane allegedly pulled out a weapon and started shooting at Feliciano’s car multiple times.

Feliciano, 20, tried to drive away but struck several parked cars before coming to a stop, Vyas said.

The SUV sped away, but Feliciano’s three friends identified Thrane, of the 3200 block of West Wabansia Avenue, Vyas said.

One of Feliciano’s friends told authorities he had seen Thrane several times before, Vyas said.

Thrane was arrested Sunday. The 18-year-old Logan Square man was ordered held on $2 million bond Tuesday.

He was found delinquent twice before as a juvenile in a theft and robbery case, Vyas said.

Thrane is a ward of the state and has occasional contact with his father and grandfather, assistant public defendant Preston Jones said. His mother died, Jones said.

Thrane has a tattoo on his lower left arm that reads, “RIP Mom,” according to an arrest report.

Xavier Shannon planned to spend a Sunday afternoon with family, celebrating his sister's wedding anniversary, relatives said.

Shannon, 32, was shot to death just hours before the party.

He had three children: Jeremiah, 10; Xavion, 6; and Destiny, 5, and a stepson, 3-year-old Zion. His sister, Delores Franks, said he worked tirelessly for all four children.

Last year, Shannon worked three jobs to support his family -- two as a security guard, and one in concessions at Soldier Field, family said. Shannon had just reached his one year anniversary at Kates Security.

He collapsed in his home from a minor stroke last year, and his mother made him quit all but one of the jobs so he could take care of himself, relatives said.

Shannon spent the extra time playing with his sons and caring for his children's ailing grandparents, family said.

“He had to carry the grandmother up and down the stairs when she had appointments,” Franks said. “He did all of the grocery shopping, cashed their checks, paid the rent [and] has been doing this for about 10 years. I spoke with the grandparents the morning it happened and they are lost without him. He did everything for them.” Xavier Shannon / Family photo

His mother, Jacquiline Shannon, said she was surprised that her son had so many friends. He kept in contact with people he met in elementary school and high school.

“He was a loving and caring person,” she said. “People liked him because he wasn't a problem person. He treated everybody the same.”

His sister said she has spoken to at least 100 people since his death.

She said she last saw her brother on May 22, when the family gathered at her stepdaughter's house to send her son to prom.

“He walked right in to my stepdaughter's house and lit up the room,” she said. “He introduced himself as everyone's cousin and had us all laughing within minutes ... At her house we had more laughs because my brother is the shortest of my siblings and his niece and nephews, so we told short jokes. He just laughed it off and the kids went on their way.”

Two days later he was dead.

Authorities said Shannon was standing on a sidewalk in the 7900 block of South East End Avenue in the South Shore community when gunfire erupted about 12:30 a.m. May 24, authorities said.

Shannon, who lived on the block, was hit in the neck and died at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Another man was shot in the buttocks and took himself to Jackson Park Hospital, police said.

Nobody has been charged for the killing.

Area South detectives are investigating.

17-year-old Richard Edwards slain in Bridgeport

17-year-old Richard Edwards was killed and an 18-year-old man was injured in a shooting early Saturday in the South Side Bridgeport neighborhood, police said.

About 2:15 a.m., the two had left a party after they were “involved in an altercation,” police said. As they were driving in a van in the 700 block of West 35th Street, a light-colored SUV pulled up and someone inside opened fire, police said.

The boy was shot in the armpit, police said. Edwards, of the 3900 block of South Lake Park, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

The man was shot in the hand and shoulder and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Edward’s body could be seen lying in front of an insurance office on the south sidewalk of 35th Street just east of Halsted for several hours after the shooting. Tenants of the apartment above periodically poked their heads out a window that faced 35th Street.

As police investigated, a woman who said she was the teen’s mother was a half block away on Halsted, crying and pleading with officers to let her see her son’s body, which was covered by a sheet.

“I just want my child,” she said. “I need to touch him. I need to hold him. I need to feel him.”

A man restrained the woman against a car, setting off its alarm twice, and eventually down onto the street as he called other people to tell them to come to 35th and Halsted.

A half block south of the shooting, in the 800 block of West 35th Place, officers blocked off the area surrounding a silver revolver that was in the middle of the street.

In the alley south of 35th Street and just east of Halsted, another officer guarded a van that had its driver’s and driver’s side passenger windows shot out.

Several curious neighbors stood near the crime scene tape as officers directed traffic around street closures of 35th and Halsted streets.

One nearby resident, Daniel Lackemacher, asked officers if traumatic counseling services would be available for those grieving the death. Lackemacher said he has heard gunshots during his four years living in the neighborhood, but never so close to his home.

No one was in custody for the shooting early Saturday. It was the second fatal shooting in Bridgeport in the last three weeks.

A pedestrian killed in a high-speed crash in the Chatham neighborhood in April that led to a man facing reckless homicide charges has been identified as an 18-year-old South Side woman.

Bria Hunter was walking in the 8700 block of South Lafayette on April 26 when a Volkswagen barreled through a red light at 90 mph and hit her, catapulting her 100 feet, authorities said.

George Evans, 23, has been charged with reckless homicide with a motor vehicle for the crash, prosecutors said previously.

Hunter had remained unidentified until Tuesday, when a friend of the family saw her description on the Cook County medical examiner’s office website, spokesman Frank Shuftan said.

Prosecutors claim Evans was driving a rented car with his cousin and the cousin’s young children, and had stopped at a gas station near 79th and State.

One of the children woke up and said she needed to use the restroom. Evans said he would get them home, and struck the pedestrian as he headed back toward the Dan Ryan Expressway, prosecutors said.

The impact shattered the window of the Volkswagen, authorities said.

Hunter, of the 8200 block of South Kimbark, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner’s office.

After the crash, Evans was captured on a cell phone video standing over the woman’s body, laughing as he talked about having been in another crash the previous week, prosecutors said.

When police arrived, Evans was sitting in the driver’s seat of the Volkswagen and admitted to the crash, prosecutors said. He told police he was only driving the rental vehicle because his car had been totaled in the other crash.

Evans was ordered held on a $250,000 bond. He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday for a hearing in the case.
